Phpnuke has come a long way since its debut in version 5.6. Although the original creator of the nuke project (Francisco Burzi) is no longer associated, nuke lives on today. In the past there have been many security issues and flaws pointed out. Phpnuke remains a secure CMS through third party addons like nuke sentinel and chatserv patches. Since, the original php nuke distribution does not come with these two things installed I would never suggest running it without them. For the beginner, your best bet is to use a fork that has pre-installed them for you.
The original version php nuke can be found on phpnuke.org. Like I mentioned above it comes with no added security. If you have decided to run phpnuke 8.1 then you need to install nuke sentinel and chatserv patches.

To my knowledge this project has been abandoned, but I think the main site is still online and it remains a popular fork. It comes with a whole bunch of installed extras. I have lost track with this community so if anybody knows more please share.

Oh, I love to quote stuff as your soon going to find out. I believe they just published the 2.0 version of this Fork.
PHP Nuke Evolution Xtreme uses Nuke Evolution 2.0.7 and is highly modified with a lot of new features, mods, hacks and other enhancements that take you beyond the basic
version. The idea behind this project was to have a PHP Nuke based cms that is fully loaded without loosing speed, security or flexibilty. We plan to continue creating new things
for the Nuke Evolution Community. If you have any questions please feel free to ask in the forums.

Php Nuke Clan
For the record, I am not sure if any of the original developers still exist on this project just don’t quote me on it. I do know some of the people currently working on the project and they are talented individuals. My one concern with this Fork is the fact they still include the VWAR option. It has a rocky past, but as far as I know they have re-secured and patched all known security flaws.
Contrary to popular myth PNC is its own flavor of the PhpNuke CMS. It is not based on Platinum or RavenNuke or Evolution or any other flavored fork of PhpNuke. In early days of PNC it was based off of a Platinum core but as of PNC version 4 and above this is no longer true.
PNC 4.5 uses a Chatservs 7.6 patched core with many additional security patches and custom features some of which you will not find in any other flavor of nuke today.
It comes with fully integrated versions of Phpnuke and vWar and Squery and Phpbb2 all patched up to the latest versions available of each and includes additional security and features you will not find in the standalone versions of those systems. There are several pre installed modules and blocks all related to Clan activities providing the most desired functions a Clan will want with their web sites.
I believe there latest version 4.5 is only available to private beta, but below you can download 4.4.0

Now we get to my favorite fork, it’s RavenNuke. I personally like it because it comes with just security patches and a few optional mods. Though lately we have seen more staff designed modules/blocks included which is ok by me too. I know for a fact that the next release is just around the corner.
The RavenNuke(tm) Team is pleased to announce the availability of RavenNuke(tm) 2.30.02. RavenNuke(tm) 2.30.02 raises the standard for Nuke-based Content Management Systems with improved, upgraded modules, themes and other addons and fixes that take RavenNuke(tm) to the next level of functionality, performance, ease-of-use, stability, security, and, of course, first-class support. RavenNuke(tm) uses the GPL license, has been tested on many hosting environments and has commonly-installed dependencies. The 2.30.02 release continues the RavenNuke(tm) tradition of combining functional enhancements, performance and security improvements and simplified ease-of-use for both users and administrators into a single package.
Update 09.15.09, RavenNuke 2.40.00 RC1 Released.
